ORIGIN OF THE THREE WISE MEN
The Christian tradition tells of some visitors who came from distant lands to Bethlehem to pay tribute to the newborn Jesus and offer their symbolic gifts: gold, incense and myrrh.
They are called Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar.
Melchior comes from Europe and he is represented by a light skin person with a white beard . Its meaning in Hebrew is 'King of the light'. He is the oldest and bears old, the symbol of kings.
Gaspar comes from Asia and he has a dark beard representing the Asian people.
He brings incense, which symbolizes the divinity of Jesus. The name of Balthazar comes from Babylon and he appears in the book of Prophet Daniel . He represents the youth of mankind and offers myrrh to the Child as a symbol of his human nature.
The Three Wise Men is celebrated on the eve of the Epiphany. The night of January 5th the Kings go into the homes of all children leaving their gifts.
On January 5th the children go to see the arrival of the Kings to their towns and villages. They come mounted on camels or chariots in a great parade with their pages, waving and giving candies to all children. At night, children go to bed early, after leaving their shoes and some food and drink for the kings and camels. On the morning January 6th, the children get up and open their presents.
