CHOINKA

W dniu wigilii Bożego Narodzenia każda rodzina ubiera choinkę. Choinka to drzewko: jodła albo świerk, prawdziwe albo sztuczne. Na choince wiszą jabłka, orzechy, kolorowe bombki, cukierki, aniołki, gwiazdy, dzwonki, które symbolizują bogactwo i radość. Choinkę ozdabiają długie, kolorowe łańcuchy. Na czubku choinki znajduje się gwiazda betlejemska. Choinkę oświetlają kolorowe światełka. Pod choinką są prezenty, które oglądane są po kolacji wigilijnej. Choinka stoi w domu do 2 lutego.

Christmas Tree

Each family decorates Christmas tree in the day of the Christmas Eve. Christmas tree is a real fir or spruce, it also can be artificial. People hang on Christmas tree apples, nuts, colourful glass balls, candies, little angels, stars, bells,which all symbolise wealth and joy. Long, colourful chains decorate Christmas tree as well.There is the Betlehem star on the top of Christmas tree and colourful lights light it up . There are the presents under Christmas tree which are unwrapped after the Christmas-eve supper . Christmas tree stands in our houses till 2 nd of February.

SZOPKA

Szopka bożonarodzeniowa przedstawia wnętrze stajni betlejemskiej w dzień narodzin Jezusa. Widać tam żłóbek, gdzie leży nowonarodzony pan, obok siedzi Maryja oraz Józef, a otaczają ich pasterze oraz trzej królowie, którzy przynieśli Jezusowi dary. W Stajence są również zwierzęta: barany i owce, krowy. Na szopce jest Gwiazda Betlejemska. Szopkę otaczają anioły. Przy kościołach są "żywe szopki", w których występują ludzie i żywe zwierzęta. Na polskich szopkach jest czasem polska flaga i orzeł.

The Christmas nativity scene represents the interior of the Betlehem stable in the day of Jesus birth. You can see a crib there, in which lies the new-born Jesus. Next to the new born king sit Mary and Joseph surrounded by their shepherds and three kings who bring gifts to Jesus. Sometimes people decorate the nativity scenes with polish national symbols(flag and eagle).

KOLĘDNICY

Kolędnicy to przebrani chłopcy i dziewczęta, którzy w czasie bożonarodzeniowym chodzą od domu do domu z życzeniami pomyślności w Nowym Roku. W grupie kolędników są, Pasterze, Trzej Królowie, Król Herod, Anioł, Diabeł, Śmierć, którzy grali przedstawienia o narodzinach Jezusa w Betlejem. Inni kolędnicy chodzili z kolorową, świecącą gwiazdą i śpiewali kolędy. Kolędy to pieśni na Boże Narodzenie. W zamian za życzenia i pieśni kolędnicy otrzymują słodycze i pieniądze.

Carollers is a group of boys and girls, who during the Christmas time walk from door to door saying the wishes of good luck for The New year. They disguised themselves as Shepherds, Three Kings, King Herod, Angel, Devil, Death and give performances about Jesus birth in carollers group.Another group of carollers used to walk with the colourful, shining star and sang carols. The carol is a special song about Christmas. Carollers receive sweets and money in exchchange for a good wishes and songs.

ŚWIĘTY MIKOŁAJ

W Polsce Święty Mikołaj przychodzi do dzieci 6 grudnia, bo wtedy zmarł dobry biskup Mikołaj. Dzieci w Polsce piszą listy do Świętego Mikołaja z prośbą o prezenty i zostawiają je na oknie. Święty Mikołaj ma długą, białą brodę i wąsy. Ubrany jest w czerwony płaszcz, a na plecach niesie ogromny wór z prezentami. W ręce trzyma długą laskę. Mikołaj rozdaje prezenty w obecności rodziny albo zostawia w nocy pod poduszką. Grzeczne dzieci dostają słodycze i zabawki, a niegrzeczne rózgi.

In Poland Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus comes to children on the 6th of December,
because the good bishop Nicholas died then. Children in Poland write letters to Saint Nicholas with the request for presents and leave them on the window's sill. Saint Nicholas has a long, white beard and moustache. He is dressed up in the red overcoat, and carries the huge sack with presents on his back. He holds a long walking cane at his hand. Nicholas distributes presents in the presence of the family or leaves them at night under the pillows. Good children receive sweets and toys whereas naughty ones get twigs.

WIGILIA

24 grudnia jest Wigilia, uroczysta kolacja, na której spotyka się cała rodzina. Kolacja wigilijna składa się z dwunastu dań. Przy stole zawsze jest wolne miejsce dla niespodziewanego gościa, a pod obrusem leży siano, żeby podziękować Bogu za pożywienie. Wigilię rozpoczyna się tradycyjnie, kiedy pojawi się na niebie pierwsza gwiazdka, która jest symbolem Gwiazdy Betlejemskiej. Najpierw czytane jest Pismo Święte - fragment o narodzeniu Jezusa z ewangelii według świętego Mateusza. Potem rodzina łamie się opłatkiem i składa życzenia. Po kolacji wigilijnej jest czas na rozpakowanie prezentów, które leżą pod choinką oraz na śpiewanie kolęd. O północy w kościołach odbywa się pierwsza świąteczna msza - pasterka.

Christmas EVE

On the 24th of December there is a Christmas Eve, a great supper, on which the whole family meets. The Christmas- eve supper consists of twelve dishes. There is always a free place for an unexpected guest near the table. Under the table-cloth there is a bundle of hay to thank God for the food. We begin the Eve traditionally, with the appearance of the first star in the sky which is the symbol of The Betlehem star.Thent we read the gospel according to Apostle Matthew about Jesus birth. After that each member of the family share the wafer and offer wishes to each other. After the supper we unwrap the presents which lie under Christmas tree and sing carols.There is also a midnight mass at churches.
